Old San Juan Restaurant Review
Jolie Magazine, November 2007
The first impression you'll have when walking into Old San Juan Restaurant will be that most of the diners are friends with each other and with the owner. The second impression? You're welcome to join this family.
And what will your impression be after eating the food? You'll have no choice but to love the family, because food this good causes an obsession. This is authentic Puerto Rican Cuisine, at bring-the-family-reunion prices with Leviathan-sized portions.
Go early to get El Convento (roasted pork, rice with pigeon peas and salad), as it is cooked all morning and they run out of it fast. If you do get there too late, then the El Escambron (shrimp in garlic sauce, avocado salad and yucca chips) is a great alternative; or, for the most experimentally included, La Garita is exceptional (green bananas with gizzards, yellow rice with pigeon peas and salad). But before any main dish, the Tostones rellenos con camarones (an appetizer of fried plantain stuffed with shrimp) is a must. Recommended drinks for those who want the bona fide experience of San Juan: the Parcha (passion fruit) or Tamarindo (tamarind) are you'll-want-to-order-at-least-three tasty drinks.
Cheerful salsa music plays in the background, to complement the happy atmosphere.
